If you are going to apply for a SIN online, then you have to visit the following website and do what they ask: https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/sin/apply.html
You will be asked who your are applying for, what is your status in Canada, and the way you would like to apply to which you will click on “online”.
From there, provide all the documents they ask you to provide and answer the questions they have.

Apply for your SIN In person at Service Canada
Step 1: Determine eligibility and gather required documents
Before applying for a SIN, ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria. Typically, newcomers with valid study or work permits or those granted permanent resident status are eligible. Next, gather the necessary documents, including your passport, valid immigration documents, and proof of address in Canada.
Step 2: Locate the nearest Service Canada Centre

Step 3: Collect the documents required
The primary documents you will need are on of the following:
- A work permit issued by IRCC or CIC
- A study permit issued by IRCC or CIC
- A visitor record issued by IRCC or CIC, indicating you are authorized to work in Canada
- A diplomatic identity card and a work authorization issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development.
The secondary documents you will need are ones that show your date of birth and legal name. One of the following will be enough:
- a passport
- a Canadian provincial or territorial ID card or driver’s license
- Any other Canadian government-issued ID
Step 4: Visit the Service Canada Centre
Now it’s time to visit the Service Canada Centre with all your documents. Aim to visit during non-peak hours to minimize waiting times. Present your identification and immigration documents and submit your application. The staff will review your application and supporting documents.

The Service Canada office will process your application and verify the provided documents. However, please note that the physical SIN card has been discontinued. Apply for your SIN By Mail (Slow, not highly recommend)
Step 1: Primary identity documents
You will be required to provide one of the following documents:
- A work permit issued by IRCC or CIC
- A study permit issued by IRCC or CIC
- A visitor record issued by IRCC or CIC, indicating you are authorized to work in Canada
- A diplomatic identity card and a work authorization issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development.
Original and valid documents will need to be mailed.
You will not need to provide any secondary documents.
Step 2: Complete you SIN Application Form

Step 3: Provide a supporting document
If the name on any document provided is different from the name on the SIN application, a legal document stating the most recent name used is required.
Step 4: Mail the SIN application
